Blog v Wiki

Compare and contrast blogs and wikis. Comment on the importance of convergence in today's networked world. How can blogs be used for collaboration? Can you think of a new use for a wiki that has not been done yet?

Blogs and wikis are in interesting positions because they both rely on user submissions as their primary source of content. 

However, the information that the two provide may differ. Since wikis are a source of information, they're much more objective and only provide facts. Someone may create a blog entry talking about their day, so the information is much more subjective and emotional.

Today's networked world converges phenomenally well. Businesses use multiple social media platforms to increase their reach. These platforms intertwine to the point where they are crucial to the each other. A video on YouTube, for example, will not go viral unless it is given Twitter's blessing. 

I have definitely seen blogs that has been used for collaboration. For example, many sports blogs, such as netsdaily.com, uses this format of having multiple contributors to provide a wider variety of information. Scrolling down this blog reveals multiple entries and authors.

 New media has done an immense amount of good for society, such as allowing one to communicate with another instantly. For example, Facebook (a giant of new media) boasts billions of monthly users and therefore controls an incredible amount of information. That is cause for concern since many issues may arise as a result. Some of these problems include: individuals stealing information about others, Facebook selling private information to advertising companies for profit, and a large scale data breach. Sharing computer data such as files between multiple devices is considered "file sharing." File sharing allows people to either upload or download files, and these people would be allowed access into these files. P2p sharing, or peer-to-peer, is a form of file sharing where the connection is made between two personal devices. For p2p to work, the user must use a dedicated p2p software such as BitTorrent. This allows a user to search through to locate the file that they want and download it. However, P2p causes many privacy and piracy concerns. An example of using P2p sharing for piracy would be downloading illegal movies and TV shows on BitTorrent. Advice

Baruch College should implement more new media technology.  During the pandemic, Baruch College replaced all courses with online classes using Zoom. Many people actually prefer this style of learning, as it frees up commuting time. In the future, Baruch College should look into incorporating more online classes to create a healthy mix of both in person and online classes. Baruch College should also look into improving communication between faculty and students. Using new media technology such as Instagram would achieve this.
